Highly commended award for UK 'Data Project of the Year'
A data-driven solution award to acknowledge outstanding leverage of data usage to achieve significant business outcome in logistics and supply chain operations, highlighting the project’s effectiveness and impact.
We partnered with a logistics industry thought-leader to prototype a fleet optimisation solution that evolved into a core enterprise capability, transforming planning processes and enabling more precise, collaborative decision-making across teams.
A major UK-based logistics and 3PL provider, with operations spanning chilled and ambient transportation, had seen strong growth over recent years. As they expanded and integrated additional business units, a challenge emerged, gaining consistent data visibility across their multiple transport management systems, load tracking platforms, and internal databases.
Objective
The core goal was clear: bring together fragmented operational data to give planning teams a unified view. With this, the business aimed to improve cost control and planning accuracy by harnessing insights from across its transport operations.
Approach
We began with a proof of value, building a minimum viable product to validate the opportunity. Within weeks, the first dashboards were live, quickly gaining traction across the business. The early success created momentum and interest, expanding the scope to include both chilled and ambient businesses.
Delivery was structured iteratively using our practical project framework, getting data in front of the right people fast, refining as we went. This allowed the business to act on early insights while the broader solution took shape.
Solutions
The platform was built entirely on native Azure cloud technologies. We used Azure Data Factory to securely connect and ingest data via failover integration runtimes. Data was staged in ADLS Gen2 before being processed through Synapse pipelines into a dedicated SQL pool, balancing performance with cost control.
From there, Power BI served as the reporting layer. Multiple reporting apps were deployed to cater to different business units, with row-level security ensuring appropriate access to operational and sensitive data.
Impact
The results were significant. The business was able to identify inefficiencies, streamline operations, and optimise routing decisions. The solution directly contributed to massive cost savings across the group.
As we continue to support the business, the platform has become more than a reporting tool. Its now a strategic asset, enabling cross-functional insights across transport, warehousing, and finance, and sparking new streams of data-driven solutions.
Conclusion
Venndata worked as a strategic data partner throughout the project - avoiding the ticket-based engagements, and the end result of continuous collaboration and working towards the same goal, the client received a UK award for High Commended Data Project of the Year
